The private world
of Armenouhi
Jamgotchian.

Portraits, Armenian landscapes and flower studies from a six-decade painting life — trained privately under Ashod Zorian, formed in Paris, and first exhibited to critical notice at Cairo's Ekhnaton Gallery in 1974. Her sitters included Egypt's First Lady, Jihan el-Sadat.

Portrait of Jihan el-Sadat — painted by Armenouhi Jamgotchian and shown at her 1981 solo exhibition at the Dikran Yergat Armenian Cultural Club, Alexandria, where it was widely regarded as one of her most successful works. Read her story

A painter formed inside one of Cairo's last great private studios, and inside a diaspora carrying its own visual memory.

Born in Heliopolis in 1927 to an Armenian family, Armenouhi Jamgotchian trained intermittently between 1954 and 1967 in the Cairo studio of Ashod Zorian, one of the formative teachers of Armeno-Egyptian painting. She went on to complete a formal art diploma at the Ecole A.B.C. de Paris in 1968, and travelled that same year through the museums of Moscow, Leningrad and Yerevan — a trip that shaped the Armenian landscapes she later became known for.

Her 1974 solo debut at Cairo's Ekhnaton Gallery, opened by Egypt's Minister of Culture, marked her emergence as a mature voice within the city's Armenian art community — one whose sitters included Egypt's First Lady, Jihan el-Sadat.
